rat and mice problems

I have alot of rats and mice in my barn and i have been putten out poision and i have put it were my chickens cant get to it am i doing to right thing or what else should i do i really need to get rid of them asap can somebody help me?

I hate to see anybody use poisons unless they really have to.
Might wind up in the mouth of an unintended victim.
Have to really know what you are doing.

i pit the poision down in the holes and in contaners that has small holes cut in it so that nothen else will get in it and it seems to work good i mixe a little corn and jelly in with it and the rats just go in after it and i havnt had any problems with my chickens or dogs getten into it and i remove any dead rats and mice asap i have already got 1 tonight and its only been 1 day.
