Rat vs Electric Fence

Good job.

I have a 3 strand hot wire around my coop and run. I have had it for a couple of years now ever since a neighborhood mutt dug under my fence and killed one of my birds. I have touched it before from not remembering to turn it off first. My fence ranges usually around 6000-8000 volts. I get quite a shock imagine what a small creature gets. No wonder it kills them. It has made my heart skip a beat or two.

I've gone out to see why my fence failed, and twice found a dread squirrel with one paw on the chainlink and one paw on the hot wire.

I DO have a steady on fence - and I love it! (and no it does't kill dogs or humans)

One thing to add for those who may not know. Voltage can kill but it is amperage that does kill. The human body can withstand many volts if the amperage is low. But on the other hand the human body can not tolerate much amperage. Also hand to hand is the worst way to take a shock as it goes right through the heart.

My stepdad decided to tease me and my mom once (this was before they got married). He had electric fences for his horses. He didn't know I saw him turn the fence off before he squeezed inbetween the 2 wires but my mom didn't see him turn it off. He bend down and touched the bottow wire right inbetween his legs and pretended to get shocked. you should have seen my mom's face, PRICELESS!

I was 16 when that happened. .

After that, mom wanted to kill him! LOL!

Oh, this just reminded me. A friend of mine told me about her mom when she was little (her mom not her).
She was outside playing around the goat pen and they had electric fence. she happened to touch the fence and it "BIT" her so she ran inside crying "mama's the fence BIT ME!" so her mom, not thinking! told her to just bite it back.

I think you know what happened next....

Good kill and pretty much dead on as to how they work. Even tho my 6 ft tall fencing is set in cement and thus grounded, I still ran a ground lead to the fence too in case dry weather/soil would cause the effective charge to be weaker. So even if the critter is determined enough or his fur protects him enough to get off the ground onto the fence, in my case there are 3 more courses of hot wire for him to climb past to get over the fence. Not likely he could stand that. I did the gate too and it makes you be quite careful when opening or closing or locking it ! Even so, I lock chooks into coop at night and nothing short of a bull elephant is getting to them unless it is maybe a two-legged skunk.

While somewhat simple in operation, an electric fence controller can be cost prohibitive to construct from scratch. In the US the controllers can be bought for as little as $20. I am not sure of the cost in your country. With your power issues, I would recommend a solar charge energizer. This consists of a 12V car battery and a charge controller that constists of the electrical box and a solar panel to charge the battery.
