Rats digging under coop

Dead rat pics? A little creepy.
Albeit, a quick death from a shot is far better - kinder - than a slow torturous death from poison.
The only things I have ever intentionally killed are fleas, ticks and mosquitos but even then, wished there had been a way to just get them to leave me or my pets alone so I wouldn't have to kill. I take no pleasure in it.
Some folks seem to get a little too much pleasure from the killing.

We had the best luck with metal trashcans as food containers. They had chewed a whole through a plastic one. So I put a little feed and a lot of poison in it and put it where the chickens couldn't get to it. Between that and a .22 we seemed to have gotten rid of most of them.
Now, my dad says that if you get a bannie game rooster, he will kill the rats.
I haven't tried it, but I probably will. My dad's advice is usually crazy, but somehow it works!

Jim,
Years ago I tried one of the ones that was "guaranteed" not to bother pets like cats - as soon as I turned it on, the cats ran screaming from the house. So that was clearly false advertising - big time. I don't know whether that brand (can't remember what it was) was indicative of other brands too or whether I just happened to find a bad company amongst others that would have been good.

Well I guess if you'll tell me where to drop off the rodents and such you can be responsible for them. Or do you only pass 'em on to your neighbors.

See, that is where you need to grow up. Maybe that is how YOU think, but i would never drop the rat off anywhere near a home. We knew a great place to bring IT, miles from a house and we knew exactly what we were doing. My husband was not able to shoot it because it was too random and he did not have time to sit there waiting. Also it was one rat.......if all you came here for is to pick a fight.......go to a bar. You want to fight with me because i care about my animals and dont want to use poison? Grow up....you should be ashamed of yourself. You seem to have a deeper disturbance than ME removing a rat from my chicken coop. Go deal with that!

I was totally not joking. My chickens are important to me and i would NEVER use poison anywhere near them. I take good care of my pets and i dont want to risk using rat poison, or kill traps as i have dogs the would try to get the bait too. Sorry if i am too resposible for you

Thanks for the support and pm's. Underneath most peoples anger is a bunch of pain, so its really kinda sad when someone attacks for no reason

Hi everyone... I see I'm visiting an old thread. I just went to let out my girls for some free time before dark. The last few days I've noticed a mess of feed on the ground in the run. Been keeping an eye on it all day and just noticed a mess all over the ground that wasn't there 20 minutes ago! I'm willing to set traps and try that. But this is happening during the day, would the problem be mitigated if I started hanging the feeder? Currently I have it sitting on a round of wood that's a few inches thick, putting the feeder just a wee bit off the ground.
