I had a funny incident one time with our mouser as well when it comes to rats. We have indoor cats and since we live in the country, occasionally a mouse ventures indoors. One of our cats is an excellent mouser and very persistent. hOnce he smells or sees a mouse, he won't give up until he gets it.
Last year I started seeing a very brave rat in our barn, so one day I decided to get my mouser, bring him with me to the barn, and lock us both inside with the rat. Not only would he not catch it, but he ran to the far back corner and hid! He didn't want any part of a rat!
I think this is pretty common. Mice are a much easier target.
