Do you have an old lawn mower or tractor (the more smog the better), find an old hose or something and use tin foil to make a seal with the exhaust then stick it down the hole, if they dont come out they will die in there holes, just leave it run for and move holes evry 30 min or so. You can always invest in a pellet or bb gun too, if there are that many that you see them all the time. Just some suggestions that haven't been said yet.

You got a pellet rifle? If you do, shoot them on sight when you have the chance. Don't feel bad about it when they have been chewing holes in your pocket eating all your chicken food

Wow. Man, they've said multiple times that they already have 4 cats. Pulling arms & legs now are we?

I'd say your best bet is to bait up all suspected nesting areas and wait a week. The good thing about bait is that the males take it back to the nests to feed the young and the females, therefore you kill twice as much as if you were using a pellet gun.
Stay away from traps. It just makes rats more wary of anything unusual once one has been caught.

Or does it? One rat goes in and doesn't return, leaving the rest to wonder what the heck happened to them and then they either go searching or they scatter & leave knowing what was in store for them.
