Just get a wire fox terrier. Presto no more rats, enviromentally friendly, cute ,loveable and sweet. A good solution IMHO

hi I have the same problem mainly becasue we breed dogs and have kennels and the rats eat the expensive dog food.. their beautiful.. shiny coats.. but they got to go.. my son is a very good shot but theres no way he can kill enough to make a dent in their numbers. so I got off of an old thread. this recipe for peanut-butter rat bombs..
I got the stuff today and plan on making some tomorrow and set out tomorrow evening..

1 part peanut butter
1 part plater of paris
vegi oil to mix

mix and make small balls that can be toted off.. what happens is they eat the ball.. and the peanut butter is processed in the stomach and then the plaster of paris hardens in the stomach.. killing the rat..

I am really hoping these will work I know its going to take a few batches and a couple months to make a difference.. because of litters of babies in nest. but I am really hoping this will work..

really hate putting poison down with the dogs and horses around the kennel..

fingers crossed it will work )O(

Ps Ill post back if it does. .. its worth a try..

To try and sum it all up.

Think like a rat and then act accordingly.

Don't feed the rats.
Don't let the rats in.
Put traps and/or poison where the good critters can't get and where the rats travel and visit.

I like the dog but the dog might go after the good critters.
Lead tends to put holes where you don't want holes if you aren't careful.

I just scanned the answers here, so maybe someone already suggested this..I had a huge problem just recently and I tried everything, but nothing worked, so I resorted to poison. Motomco makes several strengths based on the severity of your problem and I got it at Tractor Supply after researching online. Personally, I used the one called "Hawk" and it got rid of our situation entirely in less than a week. Since then, we have put a bait trap out with one-bite inside, but have not seen any action. We put the small Hawk pellets in the hole where they were entering, covered it with a rock and replenished every day. The chickens never bothered it, we never found any pellets in the coop, and this variety says that there is no risk of secondary poisoning, meaning that a chicken won't be hurt if it eats on a dead rat. None of my chickens were bothered by the pellets, but they sure were living with rats until now! Good luck!

Hi, I saw on a Metzer farms website that they put the rat poison inside pieces of PVC pipe so the rats can get it but not the geese. I thought it was a good idea. Also google the bucket trap. We caught a lot of rats with it and it was cheap to make.
YUCK!!!!!!!!
I feel your pain because I just got home from vacation and found some mouse poop INSIDE my house. We are currently battening down the hatches and waging war.
Good luck!! Get them! Do not give up!
