I can tell you from owning a fancy rat that they LOVE yogurt chips. Go to the pet store and buy them. Soak them in poison. They wont be able to resist. Just keep the bait out of reach of your birds. The rats will find them

We either use the .22 pellet gun during the day or live trap them overnight and drown them/shoot them in the morning. There is still signs of rats so we're going to invest in a night vision set up for the air rifle.

There are 3.5 million cats brought to shelters in the US every year. Rescue a couple, get them to know where home is, and let them eat as many rats as they can.

Otherwise, baits/poisons have been 100% effective for me. Ensure the chickens can't get to the poisons and you're golden.
