Raw goat's milk RAVE

i gotta say - the goat milk is DElicious! we had to really 'cowboy up' for that first taste - now we cant get enough! and yes - raw is the way to go (provided you are not one of the at risk groups).

i tell the neighbor kids that i'm having 'goat-meal' for breakfast. they always ask whats that!?

oatmeal with goat milk! whee!

yep - and have you started making cheese?

ps no goats are not filthy animals - they are in fact surprisingly clean

Goat milk is much, much more silky and light in texture. The flavor is more delicate... NOW I think cow milk tastes 'cowy' and goat milk is heavenly.

I had never had it before, either - neither had anyone in my family. Everyone made a face at the idea (ok, me included) - but I tried it anyway. Then we made pudding and everyone that has tasted it is an instant convert.

I just cannot believe how delicious it is!

Cheese making is up next - bought the book yesterday - can't wait to get started!

And yes, goats prefer to keep themselves MUCH cleaner than cows. They are picky about what they eat & drink. I was suprised after keeping horses and cows for so long. Goats are really different.

I did NOT think I would be a goat person. I decided to sell ALL the blasted goats several times before my milk goat kidded. Then the cutest kid ever was born, mama goat bonded to me, and I guess I bonded to my goat. Somehow - I am a goat person. DH is somehow a goat person (that was a huge suprise, he would like to sell the cows & keep goats instead).

Really, it's all been a shock to me.

Oh, I know.... I adore them to no end..... but apparently my DH has had a bad goat experience as a child or something

I'll win him over someday! I mean..... how can you not love them!

I haven't had goats milk since I was young.....I have some home made goat butter right now in the fridge and I can't stop eating it it is so good. It makes everything taste so much better than store bought butter.

Goat's milk is wonderful. We love it.

A word to the new lovers of goat milk - when it is heated goats milk can have a 'twang' as noted in goat milk cheeses. Some people don't seem to like the 'twang' associated with goat milk cheeses and heated milk products.

I am not trying to be off putting just letting you know so when you make cheeses and other milk products you will know at times to expect the slightest 'twang' that some people refer as a hint of goateyness.

i think i might be a cow person in waiting.. we dont have the pasture for a cow....so until then i have two lovely dairy girls. even tho i'm not totally sold out for goats - the milk from them goatie-goats keeps me interested in them.

but i have that thing where you keep thinking - geez i should get one more.....

and - have you given the goats milk to your hens!? they will go wild for it. when you start making cheese keep the whey for the hens, dogs, and cats (or you!).

that reminds me - i have some curds draining! need to go and get it finished. the fresh chevre is SO EASY. did you get the packet to make it or the individual renets/starters??

my mistake was that i did not order the wax when i got all my stuff. i'm wanting to move on to the hard cheeses but need to wax most of them as far as i can tell.

Oh! and make the 30 min mozzarella - so easy and totally worked for pizza (as did our chevre)! whee! dontcha just love going to the store and passing all the milk products knowing you have our own at home!?!

Yes!! I feel all smug about it as I keep going past the milk fridge LOL Ours save us around $50 a month, and it's just the two of us with one goat that's still nursing. I can't imagine how much a family would save.

This post is bogus. And totally unfair.

I never had the chance to taste any raw milk of any kind. I think doesn't exist. Although If anyone knows where I can get some near Slidell, LA let me know.

hey obsessed - just get a goat baby! hee hee hee no really its working out wonderfully. when we get our feeder hogs this summer we are going to save a TON of money... see? thats why i might just need one more of them goats!

and hee hee we always make the joke at the grocery store:

hey honey do we need milk?

and then we laugh laugh laugh and everyone just looks at us. we also say the same thing about turkey, chicken, ham, and of course eggs.. we think we are hilarious.

but really - we are saving a ton of money.

i havent tried yogurt yet but that will be soon. i cant believe that a quart of organic yogurt is so expensive in the store! i swear thats one of the reasons we got a milker in the first place!
