Here is how I did my first hatch.

I got the plastic carton at Publix. You will find it in the egg department. It worked just fine. I did not cut any holes in the bottom and I did not have any problems with water building up in the bottom of the plastic but you could "drill" little holes in the bottom if you wanted a drain there.

I'll set my humidity at 60% for hatching. I find that that is enough for my hatches. I'm hoping that if I speed up the pump slightly I won't have to add the longer pad. At least I'm going to try it. I'm in Florida so the humidity in my house is about 47% all the time right now. That does make a difference.

Thanks for the pics of the plastic containers. Looks great. Perhaps I'll switch out when I candle next time.

Cutie helping out there, Daddy!!

Where are you in Florida? I'm in Gainesville.

I never used a large pad. I did the following. Day 18 52%. Day 19 58%. Day 20 60% and day 21 62%.

I found that I needed to make the humitidy 1% higher then goal to get it to say there. I worked out well and I had no problem. Once the chicks start to hatch, the humidity will jump to like 70+% for a while. I did not worry too much about it and the chicks that were going to hatch hatched.

Thanks for the info...Well tonight I broke all the rules but I just had a stinkin feeling things were not going well...I had 8 eggs in the bator and out of 8 I have 4 Silkie babies...They have been trying to get out and just not making it...So I went in after them and I am glad I did...4 of them had just recently died....Makes me wonder if the humidity was correct or not...I have more eggs on the way and I really want to check to see if the temp and humidity readings are correct for my bator...How would you go about checking the humidity readings on this incubator?

Any suggestions would be helpful!

Thanks all
~Laura

This is what happened to me using a friend's Brinsea. Because it is so automated, I didn't think to check and see if the temp and humidity were correct.

So, I would get an inexpensive hygrometer from Walmart (the Accurite therm/hygr works well) and put it inside so you can see the numbers on it. It the number on the incubator and the number on the Accurite are about the same, then the incubator readout is correct. There are some threads about how to check your therm/hyg and see if it is reading correctly.

I noticed on the directions that came with the unit that there is a way to calibrate it if it is off.

Ok I am going to check this all out because there is a reason I am losing chicks...The humidity was set at 70% for hatching and I had a hard time pipping the eggs myself with a needle from a syringe...When I got the babies out the ones that had died had already absorbed their yolks which is telling me they were more than ready to come out...I am determined to get this right!...But oh how frustrating!

Sorry, I know this is the Suro thread and I didn't end up getting the Suro, I got the R-Com 20. I am just at day 21 of my hatch with it. I set 19 eggs and some were as much as 3 weeks old.
I set it for 45% humidity and then 58% for lock down. So, far 12 have already hatched, none have been stuck to the shell and all have zipped out pretty fast after pipping.
I have 7 left and I hear peeps so I think my first hatch will be pretty good.

I didn't calibrate mine, because I didn't have an accurate thermometer. They say to calibrate if you want to, and only if you have a very good thermometer. I took a chance and did not and it looks like the settings in the incubator are fine.
These RCOMs are so wonderful aren't they? I have been opening mine up all day long pulling chicks out and putting them in the brooder and it goes back up the temp and humidity in less than 30 seconds.

Today, I was unplugging my laptop and unplugged the incubator by mistake. The digital display went blank and it shut off. I immediately plugged it back in and it played a little tune while the digital display read "auto recovery of settings" and in another second it was back to the temp and humidity. These R-Coms are great. So glad I got one.
