re: Deer Netting for Overhead in Run - how to avoid accidents

I have black, woven avian netting over my run and I have never had anything other than the occasional chicken get stuck in there....and there was that one time when the goats climbed up there....that was purely due to one end of it coming loose and sagging down where the chickens and goats could climb up it, though.

But, other than that, as long as the netting is held up where the animals *inside* the run can't climb on top it is not a problem.

Ok, dumb question, but on the same subject - any idea how to keep hawks ect out of a run that doesnt have a cover? I'm putting up a regular sized fence for my bantam flock along side the horse barn, but its too big (expensive) to cover that much area over it...

I like the pink flamingo idea

Love the flamingos!

Can't do orange - the good neighbors will shoot me. Black deer netting already up. Maybe some of those whirlygig things will deter - can try. This black deer netting is so very fine it seems as though it could easily rip. If I weave each section together well, perhaps it will more of a trampoline than anything! Except if someone gets a foot or leg caught - that would not be good. Glad to read here that this hasn't been a problem, at least for some folks.

I got a plastic owl last year in the hopes it would deter Coopers hawks that decided to nest in the yard - they saw right through my trickery~! That is, they ignored it. But I will place it by this run addition because maybe it will deter the little birdies so they dont stumble into the netting.

ams, I hear you about your hen and the sparrow. When my run door is open and a squirrel ventures in, my feathered friends sometimes give chase to send him packing (they are not really aggressive, more like a little annoyed!)

Chubbydog, the deer netting was very inexpensive (got it at Lowes). Cost under $10 to cover an ~500 square foot addition to my little run. Cost a bit more for the wire that I strung in a checkerboard network over the top before attaching the deer netting to it.

I was lucky enough that my dad had dog kennels stored. We used the heavy ones for the walls, and the light weight ones to make a roof. Its quite a little supermax. I do not have complete coverage on the top, because I already know who my persistant. threats are (yuppie dogs).

To cover my arial bases I'll put up old yard type wire fencing for the gaps on top. (larger than chicken wire gauge) My kennel walls are strong enough. I don't know about your setup.

Still debating what to do about the other "predators." I could just wait for the sweet revenge of 50 roosters (straight run) crowing if I don't loose to many before then.

I use the same thing for my garden to deter birds ... so far it is working great. I am putting it over the run in the next couple of weeks.

Somewhere I read to run fishing line, zig zagged back and forth over the run to deter outside birds. The sun reflecting off the filament makes the birds aware that it is there without being a visual impact to the human eye. You do have to take care as it will break down over time and will need to be changed before it breaks off and drops into the run where it will be a danger to the chickens.

Will a night guard work? http://www.niteguard.com/ Nothing to hang, solar powered, I have a friend who says it's worked for them.
