I think that's they system resizing them as thumbnails.

Maybe that's what's causing the issue... they aren't resizing properly by our system (@CarpCharacin mentioned).

James, is there something we should change on the xf side or server side?

I'm not super familiar with the server side imagick stuff, but I'd probably suggest upgrading PHP along with imagick using the Centmin Mod Menu, and seeing if that fixes the issue. The current XF version is compatible with PHP 7.4.

I'm with you... unless they are used very sparingly... I don't use emojis much either.
