Ready Set Hatch! Set 3/17 Hatch 4/7 - ready now! Hatch-Along

I had a tiny peek while checking the water level tonight, but only a couple.

Formal check will be Day 14, then I will remove the clears from last candle. Last time I added a jar of water to replace the egg volume (heat sink theory) but this time I don't think I can do that with the rack design I have.

Thanks for sharing that! I've only seen one blood ring and it was more of a 1" section of a dark red line against the shell. I knew that wasn't the usual but had never seen one to compare. Couldn't see video 2 but 1 & 3 are super clear. Hokankai what phone do you use? Just curious, I work for a cell phone store

It's an iPhone 5 :)

Also, I recommend removing eggs you know aren't developing just in case they go bad. The bacteria can easily kill all the other chicks, and the egg could explode. You could replace them with a water bottle to act as a heat sink, which would be a lot safer. Just a suggestion though :D

Thanks - yeah, my 3 silkie clear eggs I'm removing but the marans I'll leave a few more days unless I see or smell something is wrong (smell or seeping). It's dark shelled so I can't be 100% certain, but by day 14 I'll know. It does look clear though. I can't replace them with anything unless I use something egg shaped because of how my turner works. Little water balloons is all I can think of but too afraid they'd pop! Probably better off with empty spots. I have plenty of heat sinks in the bottom section under the eggs. iPhone 5 huh? I'm more of an android girl so I was hoping you'd say a Motorola Maxx HD, lol. Either way I need a newer phone to demonstrate at work I think...I'll need to request an upgrade from the boss :)

Can I join?  This is pretty close to when my eggs should be hatching!  ETA:  One difference, is I have NO IDEA what I'm doing.  Glad I read something about candling...I need to do that and completely forgot.  My eggs have only been in for 5 days though and I've FINALLY gotten the temp and humidity regulated.

spinningchicken- sorry about that, I don't think we responded about candling! I did mine on day 5 (just a sample number), then candle all on days 7, 10, 14 but everyone does different. Some people candle daily, some don't at all. Have you checked yours yet? You're probably on about day 8?

Haven't heard from some for quite a while - if you're still with us I'd love to know how yours are doing! :D
allmychickens, annemarie, melodie_a, moni, city chicken, spinning chicken...even durr - it's been a few days I think!

Sad day today. Egg #10 gained significant importance to us. Long story short, my first time incubating all shipped eggs last fall we only had two eggs develop and one hatched. She was a salmon faverolles from our egg #10, an "extra" egg - not even a breed we requested. She was named Baby. She of course was spoiled rotten and was the quirkiest thing imaginable. Ran to greet us and loved to be held. Never "fit in" with the other chickens though and we have always wondered if she was somewhat blind. She hated being outside unless we were right next to her, so she spent most if her time in her inside corner. Baby started laying a few weeks ago (another odd quirk, she'd hop to lay her eggs - seriously.) Wouldn't use a nesting box so we built her her own floor box. She wouldn't roost so every night we would place her on the roost next to her rooster friend. We chose to incubate one of her eggs 10 days ago because we adore her so much, even though her eggs are still small to incubate. We marked her egg with #10 for luck. This morning we candled her egg and it's doing great. This afternoon the chickens were out free ranging and as usual, Baby was in the coop. My daughter went in to get her and found her dead in the hands of a large raccoon. My kids are so heartbroken, so am I. She was special to us, would've been 28 weeks old tomorrow. Sorry to go into the long story on a hatching thread. Just felt like I could use a few others hoping for this one little egg to hatch. I wish I still had more of her eggs, I would put them in to replace the three I removed today.

Oh, I am so sorry about Baby. I know you are just heartbroken. I will say a prayer for strength for your little egg! Go #10, go!

Thank you. I feel really bad and I know this is part of raising them but I'm so angry that it took the one that would be the hardest to lose. This was mid afternoon on a sunny day and the gate was open so the layers could come and go from their nests as needed. Poor Baby was so afraid to be outside and that's why she fell victim right there in her safe corner. And here I've always felt safe letting them freerange a few hours midday and worried about getting them locked up safe before dusk.
