Ready Set Hatch! Set 3/17 Hatch 4/7 - ready now! Hatch-Along

By upside down you mean at the small end or the bottom of the big end? I am assuming you mean the small end. I had one last hatch do that and it got out on it's own ok.

Part 2 started with a slight hitch, Here is my work around copied from the DIY thread.

Here is one I just smashed together. My DIY incubator was holding about 68% humidity (just went into lock down tonight) I would like it a little higher. I added a warm wet sponge, but it will dry out. I don't want to open it again until they hatch, so I improvised this 'remote humidity increaserer (patent pending)

I didn't need extra sponges in testing, but seems now, right when I need it I do!

Plastic air tube, slit with a new screw in the end.

Wire ties and a sponge. Filled from a new sauce squirter. (I use the squirter to fill my 'bator trays through a gap)

If I still need a bit more I can stack the sponges and soak them all at the same time, hopefully one should see the couple of % I need though.

That's funny, that's what I do! Except I have a sponge that is folded in half and tied with the end of the airline tubing in between. I have it sitting upright in a little ceramic bowl an use a medical syringe to get more water into the sponge. Extra water goes into the bowl, and the sponge acts as a wick.

7 babies hatched overnight: 3 Orps, 3 JGs, and 1 Cornish. The Cornish had been there for awhile so I had to take him out and unstick him from the membrane. The fan just turns it to cement if they take awhile to hatch after pipping or zipping. He's doing perfect now :). My assisted baby is still breathing, so I re-moistened his membrane and put him back. It looks like there are still a few big blood vessels that need to shrink before it comes out. It's not really peeping or trying to wiggle out just yet.

I haven't updated in a while. Lifes been super busy! So I put the babies jn lockdown Friday around 2pm... And got our first pip Saturday around 3:30 pm. Its been sitting in its peep window for 17 hours now. During the night, 2 more popped. jUst now one popped as I typed. This is so exciting! First round of chickies... I forsee many more in my future bC this is addicting! Maybe I will cave and actually buy a real incubator.

TOPSY UPDATE: he's fluffing out good now but seems like he can't lift his head. Its like its crooked over but will bend straight. What's going on? Is there anything I can do? He can't wobble too much but does roll due to his in ability to lift his head. Should I cull him or make a chick neck brace? :/

I would try some chick electrolyte drink first or some vitamin drops. Maybe it was positioned wrong - well this is the one that pipped wrong right? Maybe it needs time to strengthen neck. Check out this thread : https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/693903/quail-chick-with-weak-neck/0_10

We are up to 15 hatched. 14 have moved to the brooder because they were sprawling across the other eggs and there was no more room for all that fluff. My fan was covered so no heat was circulating. I left the black tailed buff maran in the incubator to finish drying. She/he has a slight navel protrusion so I put a little witch hazel on it to see if it'll shrink down on its own. So here's the first 14 out...

And here's one we couldn't resist - happy birthday to all the chicks hatching this weekend :D

Oh - up to 16 - a wheaten maran just popped out. Ladyrsanti - one hatched!

woot 7 babies are out and more on the way! I am loving this big incubator except for the difficulty in seeing to the back of the tray to see what's going on back there!
