SO, i opened up air holes in the remaining 15....
one peeped at me, so i put him back in.
about 4 were bloody, juicy, discolored... gooey etc.
10 were just not pipped. most of them had not even internal pips.
a couple had. what causes this?? fully grown and lovely chicks who just dont pip... and 10 out of 34... what am i doing wrong?

i have 17 i think and 18 if the last one hatches. if he doesn't hatch by morning i will start to zip him.
i'm bummed about the losses.

Welcome!!! I've not tried myself but I've seen others have had luck with the melted wax. Just be sure to remove ASAP if they look weepy or smell:/

Lady - yes, I'm hoping that I got the girl eggs, not all boys in the assortment! I didn't notice my WM eggs being overly porous. I'll look again when I candle in a few days. I'm not use to looking into the dark eggs so maybe that's why I didn't notice. In that case maybe I should up my humidity a touch for porous ones...?

Guys I lost a chick to a stupid mistake.... Before lockdown, i couldn't get the humidity up enough, so I set a bowl of very shallow water in the incubator. Today, one went in the bowl and drown... I thought if one got in, it could jump out... It couldn't

Mate that is terrible news. A handfull of clean stones or marbles. Can also use fresh sponges. I used sponges and some cheap disposable dishes with holes drilled in the lids. Air flow, but no access.

Hahahaha, I'm not the only one. I also saw a 'set up' photo on here, and it just so happens I have the same prop. Going to pinch, I mean use the idea. Hope I can get our chicks to play the game. Lots of clucking and quick fingers!

I had to take 3 mostly dry chicks out and put them in the brooder. They were pecking a newly hatched chick. I know they peck out of curiosity, but they were ripping fuzz off the chick and one ripped the remaining yolk sac of the new chick. There was a little blood but the new chick should be ok.... I hope. When I put the mostly dry chicks in the brooder, I put them right under the heat lamp, and they moved a bit to adjust to a good temp. My brooder is a large shipping crate, and I covered the top with an old blanket. I know they shouldn't have been taken out, but I had a choice to make......

That is the kind of bowl it happened in!!! Next time I will use a lid!!

Ben I have only had to change them twice on my 4 week olds, so about 2 weeks before they get too big. They're growing like weeds now though so I'll have to keep an eye on them.

I just vaccinated everybody and holy moly I'm happy that's over. Time for BED!

We did gave our their shots last night. First time giving chicks shots. We had done it with our dog before, but she was 45kg...with extra skin to work with!

I have some updates and better photo's to share, but first is dinner and get the kids to bed.

My count is up to 8 babies and two pipping. Hopefully the 11th egg will hatch also. I can't wait to see them all scratching around with their mama!!

OK, jobs done.

Baby is certainly getting better, not completely out of the woods, but heading in the right direction.

Everyone else seems to be learning all the normal chick things, like skating!






I got a couple of phone shots as they are all fluffy and cute. Some are getting their wing tip feathers. We had an attempt at feather sexing. We think we have done well in the pullet stakes, but time will tell.
