Real Genetics Puzzler for the Experts (New Pics post #25)

Here is the chick in question. He/she does not have that same chest pattern as the JG/Buff Orp chick pictured in the thread, at least not at the moment.

S/he sure is cute though.
I think I do see one marking that is similar to ours as well though. The feathers coming off the shoulders looks barred, am I correct? Our chick has barring on those feathers as well. Also, the tips of the wing feathers are not white, they are gold.
One update I had from a BYC member yesterday. She had a JG/BO mix chick hatch from one of our eggs(it was an extra) and this chick is yellow with a small amount of black in the feathering. Kinda strange I thought.

I think I'm starting to see some of those shoulder feathers with barring, yes, but the chest isn't feathered just yet, well, not much. Genetics can drive you nuts, especially when what you think you know doesn't work!

SO true. we are now up in the air about the out come. A friend of ours has a BEAUTIFUL JG/BO roo which inspired us to incubate, turns out his roo is one in a million!!

New pics of the strange baby. It's almost 4 weeks old now. I know it's Meg's with Suede. She was living in his coop for months and this was the only brown egg among the blue eggs under the broody hen.

So, wonder what makes a hidden gene, like barring, pop up to the surface after many generations? I know Julie never had any barred birds and both Suede and Meg came from her stock. She got some from Sandhill originally and some came from good breeders.

I may be searching for answers that just cannot be had. I did PM Tim Adkerson, who has not been here in awhile due to writing a book on genetics, with this link. Hope he has time to pop in.

My guess the barr gene is from your rooster, as the barring is carry on the sex chromosome. Hen cant carry that hidden, only the males, he will throw a few barr , all will be pullets.

To get a barr male you will need a barr hen. Breed the pullet back to her father you will get a few barr males and females.

Hope this helps, sex link colors can only be carry hiden by the males. If female have a sex link color gene it will show.

So, are you saying that this chick should be a pullet because Suede would have to be the one with the hidden barring gene? I had pegged this one for a cockerel, but I'll be glad if it's a pullet, though, I'm not planning any breeding with this one. No room for wild projects around here, unfortunately. Maybe someone else will take it and experiment.

Out of the 2 we hatched, one was a pullet and the other a cockerel. Their berring seems to dominate the chest area but the wings are starting to look more mottled. Crazy birds are driving me crazy
