I have a question for you record keepers. What are the realistic annual egg production for for various breeds? You see numbers and estimations from different hatcheries. For example, McMurray uses a Fair, Good, Better, Best description for each breed. They have brown leghorns and buff orps listed as “good” along with Polish! I don’t know about your polish, but mine aren’t even in the same ball park as those others. Hoover says polish lay about 110 eggs a year. That’s closer
to believable. My Leghorns and starlight green eggers lay really well, as in almost every day. Truly they lay 5-7 eggs a week in their first couple seasons.

What have you all seen for true annual egg production by breed assuming good nutrition and proper husbandry?

Thanks. That is out of how many hens? What type of hens?
I'll have to count my ladies, I'll be back with a number.

I find this varies a lot with not only the breed, but individual birds and the lines within the breed. For example, we have a silkie hen that lays medium sized eggs that are significantly larger than some of my friend's silkie eggs. We also have a lot of Cochins that are laying 5-6 eggs a week their first year (and about 5 eggs a week in season 2), which is more than that breed is purported to lay. We don't use artificial light, which is also a major factor in boosting egg production in some breeds. It's hard to know where the hatcheries get their information from if they don't reference it :)

Excellent. Are your easter eggers pretty good layers. Mone sure have been.
I have 1 that hasn't laid in a week, & I don't blame her. It's been bitterly cold.

The other three has been pretty consistent, only missing 2-3 days in between, occasionally 1 day.
