Rebel chicken, bad influence, not free ranging.

What's the shorter fence(the one the chicken is standing on) for?
That’s the temp fencing for my ducks. I was hoping to let them share a run but that isn’t working. I just bought this on Craigslist today for my ducks.

By your unvaccinated chickens being the worry im assuming you're talking about merecks disease?
The farm chickens are as much a risk to yours FYI.
Farm birds can still contract and spread they just don't show symptoms.
If my birds get sick, I’ve lost 6. If their birds catch something from mine, 1 million birds may potentially have to be put down. That’s why they are so cautious with the biohazards.

They owners were concerned about it and we told them we won’t free range. I have another farmer neighbor who does free range probably 30 chickens. Owners spoke to them too but they don’t care. They told us they can’t dictate what the neighborhood do but it would be kind to minimize the risk for them. The owner leases our farm land, if he should step in poop and go back to work, etc, you get the idea.

Just because you haven't seen the wildlife yet, doesn't mean it isn't there. You may be OK with that setup for now, but once the predators find it, they could wipe out your whole flock in a matter of minutes. Definitely cover that run with hardware cloth or heavy netting and add a dig skirt and/or electricity before the wildlife hears the dinner bell. The chickens jumping out are the least of your worries.

All my birds get locked up at night, chickens locked in the coop. So far, so good. I suppose there is always risk, but I’ll be feeling pretty good about the security after I get my ducks in their permanent housing. I will likely not lock the ducks in once they are in the tall run but I’ll probably buy a cover for it. Last winter I saw a snow owl hanging out on my barn. Need to keep my babies safe!
