Recieved my 100 Broilers and a pic of their house

I had my feed store order it for me. Anyone who carrys Purina can order it. I did have to order three bags but that was no problem with ten to feed for eight weeks!

By the way Greyfields, that bird was a wonderful chicken dinner!!!

I like to can my surplus roo's. I take off the breasts, legs and thighs and stuff them in quart jars. Ball Blue Book has the recipe for doing them. Of course, they are pressure canned. Makes their own broth while they cook. I leave the bone in and pull the meat off when I open the jar. Falls off easily and the bone on helps make the lovely broth in the jar. I use the wings and backs to make stock fresh and then can or freeze the stock. The Broilers I never can, they are just too good as roasters but the dual purpose roo's aren't the best roasters so cutting them up doesn't make me feel bad!

That sure is a pretty picture - mine at 2 weeks are not very pretty right now, as they are outgrowing their feathers and fuzz and have a lot of pink skin showing. they are still running around like chicks tho and cute.
it was colder last night, so had to put up a 3rd heat lamp, but it did expand their sitting/running area, so i'll keep it up and just raise them as needed.

what the DH did for electric in the coop was run a heavy duty extension cord plugged in at the garage thru a length of water pipe and buried it about 5" deep across the yard - then cut the end off and wired it into a electric outlet. Easy, cheap, and fast hook up and works well.

i'll have to see if i can get the purina chow, TSC here sells Dumor, but my eggers don't seem to like it much and I have been thinking about changing to something else. Maybe they just like the cracked corn and sunflower treats better, but I don't want them to ignore the regular feed waiting for treats.

i do have a problem of getting attached to my chickens - and am glad that we have someone else to process them. I know that I can't do it, and applaud everyone else that can.

Good morning to everyone! I can't believe how quiet these little onesa re this morning. Some are eating and some are sleeping right now.

Here is a pic of the house and run that I built for the broilers. Is this gonna work? I am gonna cover the opening shortly so it will be more weather protected. Tell me what you think.

I pray that it is big enough. No, it is not portable so I will be shoveling poop daily to the garden. LOL

I added this info in another thread but, I'll add it here to to help keep up with the info.

I weighed one of the birds on 10-6-08 and it was 4 1/2 ounces and another was 6 ounces at 7 and 8 days old.

Maybe if they grow just a little faster than this by 8 weeks they will be a good size.

I post weekly weights here. Or maybe I'll start a thread jsut for weights. Good idea
