I recently rescued four abandoned chickens from a canyon. One of them, Scarlett, came with a healing head wound. She's incredibly skitterish/standoffish so I haven't been able to handle her as much as I'd like. Today I noticed one side of her head has what seems to be a big bump. Poking it didn't seem to cause her pain, or if it did she hid it well. Is it just her head healing and part of what's left of her comb, or do I need to be worried about an abscess or something? I'm worried that it could be hurting her and that's what's causing her to be such a loaner and hanging out by herself. She doesn't explore as much as the other three rescued hens, but she gets picked on a bit by my core flock of chickens.
She also hasn't laid an egg since I got her if that matters. (The other three are daily layers) It took me a while to figure out she had a respiratory illness. If I wasn't specifically looking for symptoms I wouldn't have known. (The other three are also sick so I was looking for it) she's on antibiotics for the illness.
It's the top bump in the picture. The light pink area to the left of her wound is the healed part from her head wound.
That's her face on the side without the bump. (She has the biggest bug-eyes)
Side with the bump.
Side question: the edges of her wound are peeling. Do I just leave it or should I (carefully) trim them so they don't snag? The chickens don't peck at it so I have just left it alone.
