I recently hatched out a few chicks from my black Ameraucana pair. One of them hatched out red! Yes, red as in the color of a true heritage rir chick. How did I end up with a red chick? And has this happened to anyone else before?

Without knowing the exact heritage of the black pair, despite being pure bred and appearing black.. it could be hiding colors underneath.. black is dominant to red and many others such as partridge..

Also RIR chicks hatch more yellow/brownish than red.. that almost looks more chocolate in coloring.

Cute baby, I love the color. :love

Hopefully you can remember to to tag me to see the results of how it grows in! :pop

The down color is called chestnut.
I had a chick that was a mix of Buff/Orpington Barred Rock X RIR that hatched out chestnut, that grew out to be a silver partridge chicken that resembles an Iowa Blue.
