What could be causing this on my hen? I've treated with plain neosporin and vetericyn spray but it doesnt get any better or worse. Sometimes its not so red either. I also have another hen (both RIR) with same thing but not as extreme. No signs of lice or mites. Its been like this few a couple weeks now. She eats, drinks, poops, lays and acts normal. Any ideas? Wound an Epsom soak be helpful? Thank you in advance for any input or suggestions.

I would do your Epsom soak, cool or lukewarm water, and try see if you can see mites in the water or inspect her rump closer.

Desitin is one product that might help heal that but we need to find out why it's happening.

If it turns out it's pecking, the two most common reasons for that is overcrowding and low protein. What are your chickens getting for feed out of curiosity?

Thank you for your replies.....

I haven't noticed any pecking but i'm sure that is entirely possible.

They were getting Purina Layer pellets but i recently added a new lone Rooster to the flock (after 30 days in jail) and switched them over to a 20% feed. Always have free choice oyster shells available.

I will give the Epson soak a go this afternoon.

Most likely it's due to urates in feces scalding her rear end causing redness and irritation.
You can apply Nu-Stock to the effected area and it will heal and feathers will regrow in time. It will also stop picking. Wear disposable gloves while applying the Nu-Stock. Shake the tube well. It'll be in the equine section at a feed store.
