Hi - I have an 8 month old Buff Brahma named Helen who has a very inflamed looking bottom. She has feathers missing, and it looks as though it could be a bit swollen. She is acting like herself, eating and drinking. I am not sure if she is laying, but will make note the next few days. I went out this evening to check for mites/lice and don’t see signs of either. Any thoughts what this could be?

It could be feather picking from the looks of the broken off feathers. The usual causes are overcrowding, too little protein in the diet, or boredom from not getting out to free range. What are you feeding? Do they get outside to roam around?

They get Poulin Grain Layer Pellets, Henhouse Reserve, scratch grain with soldier fly larvae, and whatever kitchen scraps we might have (for example tomorrow they are getting leftover rice, peas, and corn). Recently they have not been able to free range due to the avian flu running rampant near me right now - would rather be safe than sorry! I try to give them things to keep them entertained, like a hanging cabbage to peck at. They definitely could be bored? Any suggestions on avoiding that.
