Alright. So I got a RIR/Light Brahma cross from my mixed flock. I had a bunch of mutt pullets, but this one didn't sale at the last fair. So I am keeping her for now. Well I got to thinking. A red Brahma would be pretty cool. She seems to have the exact right coloring. But her type is very RIR. I really don't want to start another project. But I have the room for a small one. So I will see what people think.

If I was to continue this project what would I breed her to? I think I may have some more eggs of her cross due to hatch in the next week or so. But I would like to improve her type. If I breed her to RIR to improve color then I get less typy. If I breed her back to Brahma then I get better type but bad color.

What should I do? And should I even do it. Would there be any intrest at all for Red Brahmas?

ID like some red brahmas but Id like them a bit redder. Try at first breeding her to one of the soon to be hatched roos then breed those chicks to another of the chicks from this hatch. Go from there I guess LOL. Also just try and get the brahma confirmation even if the colors wrong hopefully they will carry it then breed them to another WITH the red feathers and hopefully you will get a red brahma

Oh when I meant 'Exact coloring' up there ^. I meant actually that the black on her is in the right places.

Also. She is actually pretty red. Not as dark as my RIR, but way darker than my buff orps.

I will try and get some pictures of her standing next to one later.

The best thing to do with this type of project is sit down with some books do a little research and know the exact genotype of the bird you want to create and the exact genotype of the birds that you have and then figure out the quickest way to get there. It isnt always intuitive. Red Brahmas would be a sure hit, but getting them wont be easy.

I personally Dont know anything about Rhode island reds but I assume that their genotype may not be based upon Brown as brahmas are but upon Wheaten If that is so it might be a bigger challenge to use them in the mix.

With a brahma what you are looking for in a red bird is this...I think

s+/s+ Pg/Pg Mh/Mh Db/Db Co/Co 'rb/'rb' and maybe Ml/Ml s+meaning no silver and rb meaning no black extender

One problem if you start with a light brahma is that you have to get rid of silver so you are already 2 steps back....IMO getting rid of stuff is a pain. also if your bird is split Eb/EWh which way will you go seems like a lot of stuff in the mix.

If you start with a Buff brahma s+/s+ Co/Co and breed to a partridge brahma

s+/s+ Pg/Pg Mh/Mh, after F2 you will be almost done without removing any brahma characteristics

s+/s+ Pg/Pg Mh/Mh Db/Db Co/Co (maybe a black laced red but getting really close)

IDK really but I think it is faster to add stuff then to take stuff away.

but there are guys on this board who have made BLR Brahmas and some other laced brahmas and they can help you here are some links to their projects.

I point you to page 6 in this disscussion where " Dan P" shows that he already has some red types in his mixes(I think he is working on laced though)

The thread is by Big medicine who has silver laced and I believe has a thread on this site as well but has been working on these

Anyway

it took me reading a couple of books before I even began to grasp the whole genetics thing.

I wasn't actually planning on making anything. So I didn't have any set goals or anything. It was just a mutt pullet that looks like a Red Columbian Brahma so I was like. hmmm.

I have no intrest in getting partidge or buff brahmas, since I don't really like the red color either. So I guess I will just forget about it, and sell off the mutt like I planned.
