Red Bulbs - Fire Hazard! CHEAP Bulbs Not Pyrex

I heard that the red bulbs are bad to use in duck brooders because one small speck of water can cause them to explode. Plus, I think I heard something about ducks having seizures with red light bulbs, too. Anyone else know about this?

Same here, and have a few bulbs close to 10 years old that we still use from time to time. They are some we moved with us when we had our old farm. Never had one burst. Maybe I'm just lucky.

We did too...used them for years...until one came apart and the bulb fell into the brooder, killing the chicks and starting a fire.

what wattage reptile lamp should I use? I'll be keeping my chicks in my basement that never gets below 60 degrees.

Going to use 100 Watt. Depends on how many chicks and what size brooder. Put your thermometer in there so you know how warm it is just as you do with the Bulb. On the other thread Three Cedars wrote up a description of what to do about lighting also. This sounds like a good idea because I agree with the fact that the chicks do not need bright light 24 hours a day. I am open to try something different and reasonable. Cost seems to be a concern but as I said earlier, I had 3 bulbs burn out on me last year at $5.00 each. Maybe it was a bad batch. I bought them at a Murdoch.s Ranch Store. Saw Heat Emitters on Ebay for $18,00 and includes shipping. Worth a try.

I bought two of these this year after having them recommended... way sturdier and protective than other brooder lamps... worth the extra initial cost 26.00 each. The grills on the bottom lock in closed position.

Well, I am looking on the internet and price varies from $18.00 (shipping included) to $30.00 at Petsmart. I am just checking around so can let you know. Just seems worth it to me when one person was LUCKY to be home or the house would have caught on fire and another person had what they call "The Great Fire Of Sept 09" because they were gone all day and lost a Greenhouse and Coop.
