Red Fox is screwing with me

use stepping sticks to guide their feet into the trap coils springs or double long springs are going to be best for reds a cage trap to work for a red needs to be tall enough they do not have to crouch to get in the trap longer helps to so they can get into the trap the 30-36" ones are good for coon and greys not so much for reds reds are snared fairly easily too

If you're using a leghold trap, don't put the bait ON the pan...put a little hole behind the trap with bait in it. Line sticks/logs/rocks around so the fox has to go from trap to hole and not get to the hole from the opposite side.

Here's a link that describes it better than I do...my dad is a trapper and I've watched him set dozens of traps, I just can't explain the process.

Thanks for the link I have read of that method in some older books and will try tomorow . I only have 1 entrance a fox could fit throw into by backyard where the coop is. So thats where I have ben placeing the leg hold trap with sticks/debris to guide his foot in. The hold trap was sprung 3 or 4 knights in a row then nothing. I assume he's spoked now. 1 more thing I have not ben treating the trap with longwood oil is their some other replacement I can make us of ? ?

As far as hunting the fox I gave it a shot 1 early morning when I usually see him with no sightings I would love to be out their more but I don't have the time.
I'll have some time during the day next week so I'm going looking for his den.

Just set up the trap in a different spot. The fox will be wary of the place it's set the trap off, but unless you've had fur, you haven't had him in the trap. Did you use bare hands setting the leghold trap? It can smell you and can set the trap off without getting caught..they're that smart.

My dad boils his traps each year, I don't believe he coats them with anything, but I know a lot of people do.

I should have mentioned it in my other post, but there's another page on that site that tells you how to make a flat set. You could do one of those just as easily, right in the middle of the yard if you want.

When my dad catches red fox, he gets them along fences and field edges. Of course, that's not a rule foxes follow, but you could probably set right next to the coop, just set a bit of a ways from where you had been setting it.
