About 10 minutes ago a red fox, female I think, was chasing and briefly caught one of my dominique x American game stags (~ 20 weeks post-hatch). I was inside watching TV when I heard commotion and saw fox pursuing stag onto back porch. I was overly excited and poorly dressed but ran outside anyway. Fox ignored me and continued pursuit even when within 20 feet of me. I ran back in and hollered for Scoob (male German short-haired pointer ~ 9 months old) who bolted downstairs (he comes in and out of house almost freely since he can open some doors with handles) and out past me and immediately after fox which did not see Scoob coming. Scoob briefly caught fox and literally chewed its arss for a second or two before a running battle ensued which Scoob was on winning side of. Scoob drove off fox and stag is still alive although some minor injuries are evident. Scoob chased fox through pasture and fence before coming back with tail held high and scent marking as best he can (still does not raise leg yet). Scoob is bleeding a bit from front left paw but is otherwise in good shape. Scoob can be proud now when going vet!

I wish I had camera up and running for this!

Having fox survive is good. If we can convince her chickens are not worth risk of pursuing on my property, the she will inadvertantly protect my flock by keeping other female foxes away by defending her territory. Now we gotta school her mate assuming he is unable to find out from his gal that my chickens are defended. I think fox involved is same one we have seen in past year or so hunting voles not 100 feeet from my outer line of coops.

SCOOB IS THE DUDE!! Now I gotta clean up blood Scoob tracked into house before wife gets back.

Way to go Scoob. Hope your dog and bird heal quickly. When I was a mere pup, we had Shorthairs. Loved em. I often took my dad's best male out into the pasture to "hunt" snakes with a bow. Knowing what I know now I can now understand why he was a bit miffed at me. Duce was his name. He had two liver spots on his back and his tattoo number was 222. Loved that dog.

Wow. I learned something new. Had no idea that this is how foes work. I love red foxes. Where I used to live a family of them lived close by. Kept our field mice level down big time. Of course, didn't have chickens...

Scoob is up on shots. Varment patrol is part of his job description and he is classified as live-stock guarding dog with respect to our veterinarian and vaccinated accordingly.

Do not call Scoob Scooby as he is getting to be a mandog now.
