It looked like a red fox but it did not have a bushy tail .
Anyone know what it is?

Ummmmm. We need a little more info to help you out. how tall. how long, color, time of day you saw it. Any thing would help.

A red fox that has mange?

Young foxes' tails aren't very bushy. Also, young ones are very susceptible to sarcoptic mange, which often starts on their hidquarters or tail. It denudes them, causes intense itching and they suffer a horrible, prolonged death from starvation and exposure. Healthy foxes would normally be mostly nocturnal and avoid humans, but mangy ones will hang around homes and in the daytime for easier access to food, water and shelter.

Some years ago we had a fox around during the day that was so mangy you could not tell it was a fox. Scary sight.
