Red heat lamp?

Using the red heat lamps is dangerous. They can burn your coop down. I heard of someone who lost her barn and every one of her birds like that. Don't use a heat lamp for light

Your goin to have that issue with any electrical device. A little comin sence goes a long ways. (I don't mean for that to sound like a smart a**)

There are some water dispensers with a heated base. The co-op in my area has a nice plastic one with a heated base. They also have metal heated bases that you just set your water dispenser on. I think one of these might be the safest way to keep the water from freezing. The cost of the plastic one is approx. $30.00. I also saw a thread that had directions for a cookie tin heater. I don't like homemade electrical devices in my coop. Safety is worth a little expense, I think.

It's just a light bulb in a fireproof container.

It's every bit as "safe" as those Chinese made heater fountains, and generally costs less than $5

I wouldn't recommend anything made in China. Allied Precision 3.3 gal. heated poultry fountain's are 100% made in the U.S.A. I don't doubt your homemade heated base is safe, but I prefer to use professionally made electrical devices in my coops.
