I use a heated dog dish in the winter to keep the water thawed. Works great!

Using the red heat lamps is dangerous. They can burn your coop down. I heard of someone who lost her barn and every one of her birds like that. Don't use a heat lamp for light
You'd be better off to put a small bulb UNDER the water since heat rises.
Far more efficient and much less fire risk
Most heating pads ( for humans) aren't water proof, and will only stay on a limited amount of time before they automatically shut off for "safety"
It's just a light bulb in a fireproof container.
It's every bit as "safe" as those Chinese made heater fountains, and generally costs less than $5
