I have a counter offer: If it works out that I can't keep them, I'll give you chance to buy them at fair market value for quality Cornish just before I eat them.

deal- count me in... You know as I re-read my post from above.. I forgot to mention that we'll split the chicks 50:50.

ETA- I wouldn't mind trying out a couple of those CX pullets as well... I wonder what that cross would be like on a Cornish roo, or a half cornish roo? Heck for that matter..> I wouldn't mind some average ole hens to sell eggs from- I have buyers and no eggs currently just a bunch of young birds, and old birds who should start any day; as they've finished molting now...

I know one thing though... those young birds of ours won't be getting any eggs eaten by people though, hopefully not by any animals either...

Got some DC x Orp eggs in incubator, going into lockdown on Monday. This WOULD be the time none of my buffs go broody! Anyway, I'm pretty sure I know what the little freaks will look like. Sorta like a bad Cornish. But my aim is food, not trying to come up with a "new breed" or anything so we'll see how it goes. Who knows. At first I thought about trying to do more, but at the moment I don't' really have the space to do much and I don't want to crowd them. Half acre is nice, but it is a city lot, after all, and I have my gardens as well. Don't think my nice, forgiving, egg starved neighbors would care for a large breeding operation and I'm already going in a small way with BBS Orps. Oh and did I mention I'm also growing out a few CX? Heh.. so... maybe when I can move I'll do more.

The hen is just a hatchery bird, not impressive so far as Cornish go, and the roo isn't even full grown yet (7-8 months), he's a good sized fellow and breeder stock so he should get some bigger but is bigger than a hatchery bird already anyway. If you're interested, here's pictures:

These are in reality two different hens but they both have the same build and almost identical coloring. The last is the one that laid the eggs. She isn't quite as narrow as the last pic suggests but for sure not top notch stock.

What I do wonder though is, what color they'll be. I'm expecting black with dark red bleed based on what I've been told but if any have more of a notion than I do, let me know!

I'm kind of excited anyway though because these will be my first chicks from my own birds.

ETA: Judging from the personalities of these hens, I think I know what you guys mean (Al) when you say cornish are REAL chickens! What an independent, scrappy bunch! I love them.

DITTO THAT.. you know, the best thing about it that I have found, is that stuff you raise will be far superior to anything that you can purchase and bring in... I'm not sure if it's the fact that they are already adjusted to the enviroment, stress, parasites, or what it is... or it's a combo of several things...

Here is my meat daddy for next year. I believe him to be DC X Black Giant.

Here he is about 2 months ago with a WLRC (from McMurray) that was the same age.

I have a back up boy too if I need him, but this one the better of the two. Besides, the other one I dont' think has any Cornish in him, he looks just like my Australorps with some Red leakage.

I don't know if this is similar to the Red Laced Cornish. These folks raised Red Broilers a.k.a. Red Rangers of English stock.
