Red Laced Cornish X and project talk (pics p. 8)

Steve : You can still achieve your breeding goals and still have the off spring be able to produce naturaly but you gotta get started first, and that would be to AI. I have been working on my technic all summer and have hit my stride on the procedure where I am very confident every time on both the guy's and the girls to complete the transfer. Anyway give it some thought it may give your project the shot in the arm your looking for.

I'm glad you've become so comfortable with that AL; but ya know , "don't ask, don't tell" is a great policy.

Seriously, I've had to consider A.I.; if it comes to that, I may resort to that for one generation. The older, larger framed DC froze the ends off both his outside toes at the joint, and I'm sure that's not helping him. My hatchery sourced WLRC hens fight like wildcats when you pick one up, and while pretty good layers compared to what I hear of quality Cornish, not sure how much they would handle before shutting down the egg production. I hope not to have to find out. I really have a gut feeling that free range would really be a boost, but going to have to settle for a tractor on grass due to the wildlife and the landlord's "sweet" [

Now that I see you have highlighted my post in bold it looks a little starnge LOL, but you know what I mean LOL.

Steve - "You women here at BYC sure take good care of me, and none of you try to tell me how many dogs or chickens I can have, or that I need to come home every night, or at least call if I'm not coming home. On the down side, none of you feed my dogs or chickens so I have to come home nearly every"

Hi Al,
I'm glad you brought the subject of AI up. If I'm not mistaken all production turkeys are produced using AI. So it makes sense to jump start any breeding program using AI.

I had a terrible hatch this time around; mostly due to a fertility issue but then compounded by humidity issues. Eighteen live chicks from 84 eggs set. I did get some very nice chicks for my project! I misinterpretted the labels on my shipped eggs, had no lav Orps, and did have Coronation and split Sussex. Here's one of the Sussex, which will add nice size plus the silver gene and possibly lav to my flock.

I aleady knew I had 100% clear eggs from my Cornish at lockdown, plus 9 clears and an early quitter on purchased and/or shipped eggs. I went to only 30 eggs at lockdown.

I missed one clear in the purchased Ams that I should have seen at lockdown, had two OEs [of the four "too dark to candle"] clear and another early quitter . One late starter that might have hatched a couple of days late had I allowed it. The rest were due to my humidity issues. Incubating eggs is one of many things that pays to do a lot of study first............................. but then you have to learn a lot by making your own mistakes..................................... and you never learn it all IMO. After all that, no matter what I do right or wrong, I believe only He can cause an egg to hatch anyway.

So where do you go from here Steve ??, do you have a back up plan ??. Getting your Cornish X's to breed and be fertile is a monumental task involving several different measures. It took me a year before I figured it out.
