Red Laced Cornish X and project talk (pics p. 8)

Katie, the CX crosses were double the size of same age Ameraucanas and EEs.

ETA: Actually there was quite a bit of varience in size and some in build. The clean faced male was shorter than this bird but wider through the breast; and a clean faced pullet has so far gotten only slightly larger than an adult Ameraucana, but its because she's wider than adult Ameraucanas at her current 5 months.

This guy was probably at 8 lbs when pictured here at 13 1/2 weeks; and though carrying more breast meat than this picture shows, it was right after this point that he slowed growing upwards and started getting wide....................... they weren't pretty birds [this one I thought looked like Big Bird, with that long neck coming off the big body],

and the smooth faced male had even more skin showing in place of muffs...................... it was a much more game looking face than I expected, and the lone pullet has a one also. I'm expecting an order of female CX this week............................ and would not have made up my mind to go through the expence and hassle of replacing my lost crosses if they had not shown much more promise than any other.

I have one known chick of my nice DC crossed to that black Ameraucana behind the pictured bird............................ it remains to be seen how it grows out.......................... she was a bit smaller, but heavier through the breast than my other Ameraucanas, and too hard feathered for a quality Ameraucana. The little black chick resulting from that cross is banded, but her scraggly muffs identify her without looking for the band.

Hi All,

Don't forget, one of the reasons the CX was used was for faster growth.
Joe

ETA ...faster

The cornish game hen is only a broiler at abot 4 weeks. I want the same size, maybe a little biger at 10 - 12 weeks. The flavor and texture comes only with age.

Right on Charley. The cornish game hens of today, at least those I've purchased in the grocery stores, are very dissappointing. The last time I grilled one, it looked absolutely delicious, but I ended uo feeding most of it to my dogs.

My female CX chicks arrived this morning. Since they all arrived healthy, and Schlechts included an extra chick, the cost per chick, with shipping charges included, is only $1.37 on my small order of 25. [Schlechts only charges 80 cents for female CX, regardlees of order size; I'm blessed to be fairly close to a hatchery with great prices, on a very good strain of CX, and pay their lowest shipping charge.] God willing, they will be under some Ameraucana and quality Cornish type cockerals this fall.

Hi Steve!!

I love Schlecht Hatchery!! I've always been happy with the Cornish X I've gotten from them and their prices are great too!

that you get them to produce some eggs for you.

Hey AL, What is the earliest a cockerel can be used for AI. I have a grand project in mind involving cornish cross but my cockerel is only 14 weeks old. Not really crowing yet but is getting cocky.

Thank you. Sadly, I found the pullet from you lieing dead the other day, from no apparent cause. She had looked very healthy the day before, so I was both shocked and saddened by her sudden death.

Yay! Glad to see your back in the game Steve!

Thanks! I guess I was never out of the game; just thrown for a loss when the blackflies tackled me in the backfield.

I set up a brooder with 1/4" mesh flooring for the CX chicks; the poop falls through into a removable tray. It sure beats trying to raise them on bedding and constantly changeing bedding and cleaning dirty bedding out of the waterer and feeder. I'm going to put in a mesh floor in my other brooder also, they'll all just have to wait to learn about scratching after they leave the brooder [but I confess I'll miss watching the littler buggers scratch and dust bathe].

I have 14, Cornish crossed eggs, out of 20 shipped, in lockdown. I'm starting to wonder about them; tomorrow is day 21 and there are no pips.................................... every hatch that I've done on my own eggs this year has been pipped on day 20, and very few were not out of the shell before day 21 even started. I'll float test tomorrow if none pip tonight. I have more eggs needing to be locked down tomorrow, so I was hopeing for those already in the hatcher to be out of their shells a little early. [There were complications that delayed a shipment of eggs for a few days, so I went ahead and set those that were already here. When the other eggs arrived, I set them before figureing out their lockdown date was the other's hatch date]
