Hi, I just saw this and noticed it was an old post. It may be scaly leg mites, are the legs inflamed, and the scales puffed and raised?
Did you go to the show, and what happened?

Hi sorry for late reply,
The scales were slightly raised but i don't think it was scaly leg mite, as i check for this regularly. Yes i did go to the show as the redness had died down by the Saturday. I have read that it can be hormonal with the rooster, but not quite sure why it happened to my hen, and why it hadn't happened to my other birds, perhaps it was something irritating them - i don't know. Anyway i got best novice with my hen and second with my little roo.

There are pictures on an updated post, but i haven't had this problem again.
Thanks for the reply. :)

Redness in the legs is normal I believe, and seems to be something that happens in the spring and summer, so I do believe it has to do with hormones. On the " natural chicken keeping" thread many people noted back in spring that there chickens all had this characteristic. Most of my chickens had it also.
