Red Neck Coop

That Great P is a fabulous dog...here is the info on them.

The Pyrenean Mountain Dog, known as the Great Pyrenees in the United States, is a large breed of dog, used as a livestock guardian dog.

The Great Pyrenees is a very old breed, and has been used for millennia by the Basque people, who inhabit parts of the region in and around the Pyrenees Mountains of southern France and northern Spain. More recently, the breed served as the official dog of the royal French court (whose prominence began circa the Middle Ages, and lasted until the middle of the nineteenth century). During World War II the dogs were used to haul artillery over the Pyrenean Mountain range to and from Spain and France.

There is an organic goat farm about a mile and a half from me and they have three of them monitoring the goats and guarding them. They have yet to lose one to coyote or a mountain lion.

As I have said a million times chickens will adapt to anything! As long as they are secure at night to protect them from predators and have dry windproof housing in the winter they are happy and know nothing different.
I know chickens to many on here are pets, and mine are also to some degree. But I never lose sight that they ARE livestock and I treat them as such. I can not eat them because that is where the pet aspect comes in unfortunately.
Chickens have endured for years and will continue to do so. To them birds the "Redneck Coop" is the Taj Majal!!!!

I don't want to be a party pooper, but in year or so the coop will start to get rank (smell). How do you plan on cleaning it out. The smell is very likely to come through your floor and fill the room with that lovely aroma.

"How will I handle the smell if it gets out of hand"

That is definitly on the back of my mind, so will face that when the time comes. The plywood floor, just slides out for cleaning, so I could just change the plywood flooring.
Hopfully that will work. If I can't get rid of smell then I will have to build and external coop.
