I'm looking to add some more egg birds this spring, and have decided to get red or black stars from McMurray. Has anyone had experience with both? Which did you like more, and why?

I have never had the Black Star, but I have had the Red Star and love them to death. Lay year round big brown eggs. And they are very sweet birds. They get right under your feet when you walk in the pen.

I've had both and both are wonderful...nice to look at....and of course great egg layers. I couldn't pick one over the other because they were both great. I will be soon making my own black sex links...because I have a RIR roo and BR hens...Good luck with what ever you choose...maybe even get a couple of both...

They are both awesome!! I would get some of each. My black is a great layer, independant and a fantastic freeranger. My friend's reds are sweet and amazinging layers.

At least one of each, of course!

I've only had one of each from MMH so it would be difficult to draw conclusions from that. They are both nice & gentle and good layers. But the Red Star had a blow-out and died, while the Black Star is still here at age 4. She still looks glossy & fit but I don't know for sure if she's laying.

I don't think there's that much of a difference, they're both bred to be good layers. It seems that many brown-egg farms use the RSLs, or at least it looks like that from the photos. Does anyone know if that is true?

Thanks Sunny. The good layers part is the reason I'm getting sex-links. Love all the big, brown eggs.

But I want them to be friendly and calm. I got 5 RIR's from McMurray in my last Rainbow Layer order, and hated them. They were flighty and always picked on the others. Everyone else was getting bald backs and tails from them, while they were all pretty and sleek. Looked like they did it just for kicks! I sold them at 16 weeks, just before they were ready to lay. So I'm concerned that either the red or black stars will be like that, with RIR in their background.

I'm most interested in the personality of the two, and if there's any difference. If not, I'll just get half a dozen of each and be happy!

Thanks everyone!
