My eight-year-old hen has a red sack hanging out of her vent. It is a bit squishy and you can move it around. At first, I thought she had a prolapsed vent, but under further inspection, I don't think so. I pushed it back in with coconut oil and applied sugar water. Any suggestions on what it is or how to treat it are appreciated

It's may be incipient prolapse. The tissues age, losing elasticity, and exertion when pooping or egg laying can cause the tissue to slip.

If her behavior changes, if she appears to be struggling to poop or expel an egg, standing stationary, perhaps with fluids leaking from her vent, she could be struggling with an obstruction. Watch her vent in case she begins to prolapse in earnest.

If you see more of the red sack exposed, remove the hen to a crate for her safety since the other chickens will be attracted to the red tissue and they may injure the hen. A calcium tablet should be given to help the hen expel the possible obstruction.

Thank you. I have her in my garage for now. Luckily, she was the last of my flock, so no one was picking on her. I just put her in the garage so I can keep a better eye on her. I will add a calcium tablet.
