Red Sex Link Hen Having Goopy Vent Problems

It is just getting worse I think my ACV might be faulty (not raw enough? or something?), so I'm going to look into a better brand. Maybe I'll try squirting it up the vent again for a few days...

So Miss Lydia and Mysunwolf how are the vent issues going? Any improvement?

Still got it here but it seems to be a little better, she doesn't seem to be as depressed and she is eating better too, So I am still giving anywhere from 3-4 tab of ACV in 1 gallon of water. She came to me like this and I have no idea how long she had it before I got her. But i am not giving up.

I have been looking for a book a friend gave me and finally found it. It was her college textbook on Poultry health. I found where it talks about Candidiasis- Sour crop/ vent gleet. It says an antimycotic drug will control the infection. These drugs are Fluconazole or Nystatin. Fluconazole and Nystatin are anti fungal medications used to treat yeast infections. Both are Avian medications.
Vent gleet can also be associated with a condition called cloacitis. Do either of you have a vet you can get some medicine from? There is an online place called Foy's. It is an avian supply place. Maybe they might have something.

Ok found something that I really think is worth trying! Grapefruit seed extract. You can buy it in any health food store. Search it on the internet and you will find several things that say exactly what it does and how it is good for livestock and poultry. I'm going to get some and start adding it to their water. Doesn't hurt to try!

Have no idea...I've never had that problem, but have you thought about giving her some plain yogurt to help balance out her gut? Try mixing it with some cooked rice, and keep giving her the ACV. I've used Braggs with the mother. Good luck, that sure does look nasty and uncomfortable for your hen.

Oooh, a natural alternative to the vet meds (definitely don't have a poultry experienced vet around here). Thank you! Will definitely try it, and hopefully there'll be an update in a few weeks. Awk just started following the flock when they free range instead of staying in the coop all day. Her eggs are still covered in goop, it's pretty gross.

Yes that was one of the articles I found! Great info! I think it wouldn't hurt to put some up their vent just like some of you were doing with the ACV. The article did say in cases of heavy worm infestation it could be sprayed undiluted into the mouth of livestock. Maybe figure out a formula to dilute it at first and put in vent area.

I had a hen like that, if it stinks she may have maggots inside her vent from the mess on her feathers and flies getting to her as one of my hens did, that had an egg break inside her. You need to trim all the feathers, put her in a bathtub and take a syringe and squirt some peroxide up inside her vent. If she has maggots inside they will come out, keep squirting the peroxide into her vent until you see no more maggots coming out. Then separate her into a hospital cage and feed her high protein, like scrambled eggs and add calcium to them then add a bit of nutri-drench to her drinking water and give her a broad spectrum antibiotic such as terramycin (OTC) or baytril (prescription only). Within a week she will look 100% better, but if she does have maggots inside her which she looks like she does, if you don't get them out she might die.
