red-tailed hawks :(

guaranteed jail time. your not even aloud to chase them away in Pa. i think jail is mandatory if you kill one..

they are such beautiful creatures.. extremely lethal to chickens

but beautiful just the same.

im just glad my dog keeps away all unwanted coyotes and fox. the girls luv him, they hang out in his dog house and he gets upset and barks. they luv stirring up some fun with him on a daily basis

Red mylar ribbons tied here and there. Some fishing line strung on T posts to affect their ability to dive bomb. If you have a fenced in but open top area for the chickens consider a dog on the outside. My dogs love to chase off any bird that lands on the ground.

I was just thinking the other day if a hawk landed on my hen and if I was running and tripped ONTO the hawk and killed it.....would I still get fined for accidentlay killing a hawk??? Not like I would call and ask,but it just occured to me that in the mayhem to resuce my hen I could trip and fall on them both in my bumpy ,hole infested yard!

I agree they are beautiful, but I won't let them eat my hens. Only I can eat the hens!

I have never had a problem with the turkey vultures, but they sure get my chickens running when they see them overhead.

i found a dead hawk last year that got hit by a car. i showed my one buddy and he said i could be fined for just having the feathers. they are pretty strict.

i would be reluctant to run after this hawk cause he is pretty big. i found owl pellets yesterday in the woods around my place and this owl must be huge cause there was about 6 rodent skeletons in the pellet. (i actually counted them)

i always look at the sky now for predators.. i feel like im becoming a rooster hehehe

Have you any crows hanging around your place..? You my want to encourage crows to hang around by feeding them some table scraps.I have a platform for crow scraps, they check it fairly often. They do a terrific job of chasing off redtails around here.Just a thought and suggestion. My hens also know the crows cry for danger and hide in the evergreens when hawks are near.

The vultures have me running as well as my chickens !! I have a hard time figuring out if it is a hawk or a vulture flying over head. Any hints?

yes i do i have three pairs of ravens that hang out around my fields. i feed them and call them. they are starting to get closer to the chickens. the roosters and a pair of ravens just hand a stand off in the driveway the other day. they were very civil.

my hens also react to crow and raven calls

i have seen the hawk get attacked by one two weeks ago. the raven won

i can usually tell by the wing profile vultures have a v-shape to their wings. and are very dark. most hawks around here are lighter color and have straighter wing profile.
