Redcaps

Hi elias

The female Redcap has a modified spangled that is in the shape of a half-moon. The male Redcap shows what I think is the Wheaten gene, as the Redcaps are very light as chicks then very dark as adults. The Redcaps do have a color pattern all to themself.

I believe this pattern is also the color of the British Red Dorking. The American Red Dorking possesses the Standard BBR pattern.

Our White Dorkings also lay a tinted egg, sometimes it is an antique white but other times it's a bit of a cafe au lait color. In the earlobes I also have females that will have white, not really enamel white but a bluish white overlay. I think that red ear lobes in both of our breeds is something that came later rather than sooner to our breeds and thus it is not an easy victory.

So, have you considered your breeding plan? Have you ever heard of clan breeding?

Hi Yellow House Farm

Yes I was thinking of going with the clan breeding plan or the rolling matings plan.

Great! I would think that was a very respectable hatch rate, they are young yet. I'll check back for baby pictures.
I was on the Poultry Keeper and found some of your photos. Your cockerel really is pretty. You aren't tired of hearing that are you? Did you keep any of the others? I'm going to always try to have a back up after this past summer.

I was very happy to see that there was 3 fertile eggs. Now if the third egg will be hatched out by tomorrow morning that would be great! Hearing good words about my Redcaps makes me very happy

( THANK YOU ! ). I only have the one cockerel so if I am lucky one of the chicks that hatched out tonight may be my back up male in the future.

Be aware that birds hatched out this time of year can be difficult to raise and are often, though not always, smaller than birds hatched in the winter and spring. This is the main reason that folks years ago didn't hatch this time of year: it's just too difficult on the rearing side of the equation.
