Redinator's First Hatch-Along w Bonus Broody: And Everything Thereafter

Snickers always wants on my shoulder, but then he pecks the crap out my ear. He bolts when he sees me trying to grab him to take him down, 5 minute later he's back. He's such a little turd, lol.
Rilla likes my shoulder too, but she has a fascination with trying to eat my hair! And it's up all the time. She just picks at it and pulls out strands. I always make her stop because that can't possibly be good for her.

The large incubator I played with a bit yesterday is running again. The humidity without any water is at 38% . . .this doesn't bode well for a dry hatch.

I'll give it an hour and see if it goes down. If not I might use this one to move eggs into for lockdown. It has a nice large base with plenty of room for chicks to move around and get their feet under them.

She might be trying to collect nesting material. Cookie loves to get on my head, he wants to be at the highest point possible. I was fine with it he started pecking at my scalp. I think I have too many boys in the last batch, lol.

Lol ouch!

I actually wondered that about Rilla. Some instict telling her to do that. For a while, my daughters had zebra finches that constantly made more zebra finches. If they sat down too close to the giant cage, the birds would pull their hair through the cage slats to make nests.

My incubator sits at between 37-45% humidity (depending on the weather) without adding any water. Eggs that came through the post are more variable but I've always had a good hatch rate otherwise.

I don't think chickens really build nests though. When Pot started laying she dug a pit in the dirt under my stairs and laid eggs there for at least week before I found them.

It's dropped down to 30% once I found the vents and closed them a bit. 🤞
