In my experience, a household thermostat (for air conditioner/heat pump) will not go high enough... At least, I could never find one that did... Most people don't want their heater to go over 100 degrees... LOL

Not true. Mechanical thermostats have an internal adjustment an mercury bubble thermostats just have to be tilted.

Thats inside a side by side fridge that I ran about 2 years(24/7). Replaced the hairdryer once($10) in that time an worked great. I wont use anything else as a heater for any incubator bigger than 50 gallons.

Robo I have a wooden ( X-Large ) homemade 'bator that a guy gave me awhile back and it has no widows....you NEED windows trust me!! Make the whole side into a window, trust me you'll thank me for this!! Also, make sure the chicks can't fall off behind your turners and get stuck. Had that happen once. A chick hatched and fell back behind the turners ( about a 1ft. drop ) and fell behind the fan. We had to totaly unplug the whole incubator and take it apart to get the poor chickie out!!

Will post a pic of my homemade 'bator tomorrow - perhaps.

I am putting plexiglass on part of the top. I am going to have a hatching tray with wire sides so they can't jump out. This won't be a problem as soon as I build a hatcher.

i am also in the process of building a bator. my nieghbor is a cabinet builder and my dad is a retired electrican. i am using some left over 3/4 inch birch plywood, it will have up to 5 gqf turners, electronic thermosat, heating and fan that is used in a sportsman, a false wall in the back so the fan blows air out the top and pulls air from the bottom. circulating air top to bottom in a circle. plexi glass door, on day 18 the turner comes out and a hatching trey goes in its place. i can hatch from 42 to 210 at one time. automatic water bucket also. and the best part is i can build it cheaper than buying a sportsman and hatch more eggs at one time. if i only new how to post pics on here. trust i have tried and give up. l.o.l.
