registering for baby

we went today and registered for the baby shower/ bbq. got some really nice things and some things i didn't really think we had to have but hubby
wanted.(i don't think we need the water therm)but anyway, even though we got probably the necessities(95% of the registry) wow are babies expensive!!!! and call me simple but i don't see the need to buy the baby a bathtub of it's own when there are two already in the house!! i chose the piece you place the baby on in the tub, the other tub just for the baby seemed too heavy and overdoing it for me. but anyway, we are very happy to get to this point and blessed to be able to provide for her.

My sister has/had 4. Yes FOUR strollers/carriages on her registry.

The baby tub that I got fit in the sink. Let me tell ya. Saves the back a lot of strain. The one we got for her that suctioned to the tub. Was a PITA.

We got a wipes warmer.

Never used it.

Also never used the itty bitty witty washcloths.

Most of the hats wouldn't fit our kids' heads. (ow!)

It's the most fun we've ever had, the whole raising kids thing.

when we don't want to strangle them, of course!

yeah, i was out voted on the little washclothes, but what's wrong with the washclothes we have?! i didn't get the warmer either, i think a lot of things at the store are for people who have way too much money or no comon sense. i was laughing on the phone with a freind of mine about how we drank from the hose and we are still here..... no worse for wear.
i just figured i'd take the things we won't use and exchange them for formula or something.sometimes i don't argue i take the "show me " approach. but have you seen the bottles of nursery water? is that not the same as distilled or bottled water you get at walmart for like .75? i guess i'm cheap, poor kid..........

My Dh was the same way when registering at babies r us. I think the scanner is the equivilent of a remote control as it sent him on a power trip lol. Babies are expensive, even when you don't fall for all the gadgets you'll never use or buy all brand name clothes.
As my son was a growing baby I found it most helpful to be stocked up on jammies, onesies (sp), small burping towels and several changes of sheets & blankies. Having many of these items on hand saved from doing laundry every day

I would have needed a fortune's worth of cute clothes to keep him dressed up and clean for a whole day... That commercial for stock trading with the baby talking then spitting up...

Half of the things on the "MUST HAVE" lists will never even see their way out of the boxes. Wipes warmers, well, if you REALLY want one, sit the box of wipes on top of the TV or VCR, that's where they'll probably end up anyways, and it'll warm them just as well. The tiny washcloths, GOOD LUCK! You need "adult" washcloths, otherwise you'll end up with a cloth that's too small for YOUR hand, and it's your hand that's going to be doing the washing. Our baby wash cloths ended up being play toys for our son on warm days (we'd strip him down and give him a cool wash cloth to play with) or used for him to chew on when he was teething (teething toys were a joke too, btw). The Diaper Genie, which I thought we had to have (and got from my sister), we never even pulled it from the closet. The bottles did come in handy, we had a huge assortment to test out and choose the ones that worked the best for us, but the majority of them are in the bottom of the cabinet, used once and stored away.
Nursery water, lol, yes, again, what a joke. Our son drank tap water with the rest of us. You don't have to use "special" water. Half of the infant/toddler foods are DISGUSTING and I wouldn't eat them myself, let alone allow an infant to eat them. Our son ate a few jars of each type to test allergies, and that was the extent of baby foods. For the most part, he ate what we ate (cooked the way we ate it, with salt/pepper). In fact, we couldn't get him to eat any jarred meats. Can't blame him. It literally smells AND looks like canned cat food... so much so that the cat thought that we had a jar of her food, no joke.
The bathtubs, I bought one, then my mother bought another one because she didn't realise we already had one. One of them was used once, then I realised how much easier the sink was, then he graduated to a tupperware container (we only have a shower stall), now he gets a shower like a big man, lol.
As far as clothes go, we really didn't buy our son very many clothes. People are OBSESSED with clothing. We actually had so many clothes for our son that he didn't get to wear all of them before he outgrew them. We just recently bought him a few pairs of shorts for around the house (our place is HOT), and he's 15 months old. Previous to those shorts, we probably spent MAYBE $20 on clothes, but that certainly wasn't a necessity, it was simply, "oh my god, look at how cute that outfit is, we HAVE to have it!"
Burp cloths, eh, I don't like them at all. Tea/hand towels work SO much better. The burp cloths they make now are designed to be cute, not to clean up baby puke, towels are made to be absorbant and work so much better than those silly little decorative pieces that cost $5 for two or whatever they're going for now.

She never spit up, so that wasnt a issue
she lived in onsies, but my mom bought her clothes at the consignment store. we fed her the veggies and fruit baby food. But she wouldnt touch the meats or the toddler food

The must have for me for my diaper champ. It WAS NOT a diaper genie, I never figuered those out AND you had to buy special bags for it. With the diaper champ you use regular trash bags and you can do it one handed. Trust me, you will be doing everything one handed!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another must have if you are breast feeding, the lanolin that comes in the purple tube. MUST HAVE. Use it everytime and you won't have any problems. Good luck, and congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Babies are so wonderful and sweet and snuggly and gosh I can smell one now..........must...........not..............give................into...............baby...............urge....................NO more for us.

People think babies need so much stuff!

This is all we used:
Cloth diapers and covers
Cloth wipes
Sling or wrap carrier
A vibrating bouncy seat
Car seat
Basic clothes--we liked baby legs and onesies or lap tee's since it was warm
Burp cloths--we used extra prefolds and swaddling blankets

That was seriously all we used. We never touched the crib (we still like co-sleeping), or the swing, only used one baby seat occasionally, didn't need bottles since we breastfed, we put warm water on the cloth wipes so no wipe warmer was needed. I made the baby legs, made the wipes, and our baby practically cost nothing since we didn't have to buy diapers, wipes, or formula. We also didn't do babyfood, we did baby led eating instead where you wait until they can pick it up and eat it...started with things like a whole over ripe pear to gnaw soft bites off of, or peas she could pick up and try. Worked really well, and I'll definitely do the same thing next time I have a baby.

I think it's funny how many things there are in stores like Babies R Us that you definitely don't need as long as you are willing to actually hold your baby most of the time. I figure if babies weren't meant to be held and cuddled they wouldn't be so soft and squishy and sweet smelling, right?

About the nursery water--I think it's silly to buy expensive bottles of it, but I think maybe the reason some people don't use tap water if they formula feed is because of the fluoride. The level is supposed to be safe for adults to drink, but when babies drink bottle after bottle after bottle made up with treated water then their smaller delicate bodies end up with a lot more chemical than an adult or bigger child would get just from drinking a few glasses a day, if that makes sense.

We bathed our twin daughters in the kitchen sink. We would lay a towel in the bottom so they wouldn't slip around.

Works great and no bending over!
