Yes, that is the correct definition, but you really don't want to show a bird as young as yours. Most folks agree that a bird should be at least 6 months old, and preferably 8 or more. It partially depends on the maturity of the individual bird. I do hope you have another bird she can show--it is a great experience!

If she is going to be shown at a 4-H show, go ahead and take her.

If it was an APA judged show, she would be disqualified.

Thanks again everyone! I went out to check her other splash and she has the right comb! But....she has a slightly crossed beak so now splashes this year

I asked this question on the genetics page too, but am going to double do...sorry mods...is crossbeak a genetic defect and should we not use her for breeding? It is very slight, so slight that I had never noticed it before and I am with them every day.

DD has plenty of birds to choose from, she was just hoping for the Splash.

I am so glad that I found BYC!!

It's not best to show young birds, but I did at MY small County fair and took home Best of Show as well as several other awards.

My bird was only 3 months old at the time. And it was a 4-H show. Like I said, it was small. The best place for new showers.

But I do agree that it's best that if you bring a young bird, to at least have it bred as close to the standard as possible. I think the bird you have in your first post is a pullet. But although the judges at these small fairs won't pick at tiny details, they will notice the single comb right away.

I think crossbeak is a genetic defect. That's what I've heard.

Perhaps you can interest DD in another type of bird? Or another Silkie? I really think you should go, though. Great learning experience and lots of fun.
