One week ago today, two of my Buff Orpington‘s hatched out seven chicks between the two of them. I was going to leave the moms in the big coop but because my ramp is so high off the ground, I ended up moving them into a small cage that is within my larger one. I had intended on each mom having her own place to raise her chicks but after I had them all set up they piled up together in the middle of the floor. So far, both moms are raising all seven chicks together and getting along great. They come out together each morning and go to bed together each night. The chicks go between both of them so I don’t even think they know which ones are theirs. Everything seems to be going well and my other two buffs are around the moms and babies all day however they can’t touch. They do not seem to be phased by any of it. I know that the moms are going to get tired of being confined in the small pen and the babies are starting to grow fast so I was wondering if it would be OK to try and re-introduce them at three weeks old or would you wait a little bit longer… In the past, My four Buff Orpington‘s have always gotten along really well and we’ve never had any troubles. We do not have a rooster and actually these eggs were given to me by one of my friends. All four of my buff Orpington‘s are about 4 1/2 years old so I know that the time is coming when we’re going to start losing them and I didn’t want to be without chickens. I am a chickaholic and I keep a very close eye on them.
