I love the heat and the fact that I never have to shovel snow growing up my family had chickens from ages 3-10 but after the last one past away they decided not to get anymore. Well, 12 years later here I am buying my very own chickens. I have built a coop and run by hand and set it up on the side yard where they will call home. I’m putting up a fence to block the side of the yard from the rest (I have two cattle dogs who hopefully will make good friends with the chicks). I live in a suburban neighborhood but I am lucky enough to not have any form of a home owners association. I currently have two 3 week old Rhode Island Reds and one 2 week old Barred Rock. I’m waiting on my local store to get some more baby chicks in but it is pretty slim picking during the winter. In a few days I plan on picking up two more chicks. Hopefully they can all get along but if not I will set up another brooder. Thank you guys for the time and have a great day!

Welcome! It's fun to read about your enthusiasm for your new flock, and it's great that you've planned so well for their arrival. I hope you enjoy the website and I hope it is useful to you.

Also, I have to agree with Dobie. Snow is kind of nice sometimes!

Your suburban coop sounds similar to where I've built mine as well... the side yard is a great place to keep them contained :D

Hopefully you can get your new chicks pretty soon, I've seen mixed ages up to about 3 weeks apart do very well growing up together. RIRs seem to be more assertive than others and usually top the pecking order, so you might be better off getting 3 new babies (a larger new group is a safer one). Have you heard of Mama Heating Pad? Using that or anything similar would create a more peaceful brooding environment than a 24/7 light that can bring out neurotic tendencies (IMO). I've also heard of older chicks being pretty brutal towards babies, so I would think MHP could help ease any early tension.

I lived in Tucson for a couple of years but dh’s job brought us back east.
I still miss the desert.
I have a lot of photos in my house to remind me of its beauty.

I love the sound of this new beginning of yours.
Take notes and photos along the way. It would make a great story. :hugs
