Relentless Hawk...Help!!

Love It!!

I'm sitting here pondering the insanity of livelihoods and bank accounts being in jeopardy over a bird. People encourage deer & bear hunting....among many others, but God forbid you kill a flippin' hawk. Just saying....
I quit keeping up with this thread a while back because of all the political correctness. I don't see how anyone's bank account could be cleaned out over killing a hawk. It amazes me to no end how some folks are so worried about stuff like this. If your local Bigwigs declare Prima Nocta (Braveheart), are you going to wish your wife a good night and send her off? Some stuff just doesn't fly well at my house.

We had an incident near Austin a few years ago where a dove flew into a man's window, breaking its neck. The man cooked it and ate it, and posted about it on Facebook. Because it was not dove season, the game warden came along and fined him for it. So, yes, there are laws out there aimed at protecting certain species, but sometimes the interpretation is silly.

It's idiots like this that give LEOs a bad name. Had the dove broken the window, was the game schmuck, er, warden going to cover the cost? Didn't think so. It's not their bird/animal/whatever when it causes damage. It's only theirs when you harm or kill it in a way that doesn't meet their criteria. Kind of like those kids that vandalized that house, but were suing the one who caught and stopped them. Absolute insanity!

I live in FL and hawks are always in the live oaks in my yard watching my chickens. I keep them in a covered run full time to keep them safe (they're only 7wks). Because of the beautiful live oaks we have an over abundance of flying pest (insect and bird type). I have fly tape placed around the outside of my chicken coop (lots of it) to help keep things under control. Last night I went out to check on them and there was a hawk in the middle of the yard with it's wings spread. I thought somehow he had gotten into the coop and had one of my chicks, I started screaming for my husband to scare it off. I frightened the hawk with my screaming and it started flopping across the yard like it was injured. It was cornered in the yard and screeching. I counted my chick and they were all there huddled in the corner so I locked them away

. We left the hawk to his own demise not knowing what we would find this morning. Waking up, the hawk is gone and so are a few strips of fly tape. Now knowing the fly tape saved my chicks, The hawk and his friends are still hanging around but more fly tape is going up today!!!

I don't have the problem of hawks hanging around my place. For one reason or another, they just don't hang around...

Yeah I thought daytime was safer too...My poor silkie roos throat was ripped open at 4:20ish today by a ****** hawk. I was just outside a few minutes earlier with the flock. Grrr...my husband is determined to keep the BB gun out from now on. My poor silkie hen is devastated!!!

Those chickens are members of your family, as far as I'm concerned you do whatever you have to do to prevent any further loss. Just make sure there are no witnesses
