Well I am certain that the 3 BCMs are hens, too. After 5 BCM roos, I think I have them pegged. This is nuts. I really don't want to eat them, I don't think I want to go back to the breeder yet again... I hope I can find them a home. So Lucy and the 3 BCMs (Matilda, Ebony and Iggy) are the only 4 hens out of 12 birds we got from this guy (while being told they were all pullets). Yeah, I could pull one out easier blindfolded!

Lucy is the only pullet. And one of the white Rocks has feathers on the legs, or it appears so in the photo. WRs should not have those, but it's a cockerel anyway.

...I hatched 7 Silkies this spring, looking forward to fluffy broody hens. The result? All cockerels, and they crow constantly.

It's threads like this that make me more determined to breed easily available sex links, so folks don't get duped into cockerels. I would be mortified if I'd first sold someone cockerels, then replaced them with yet more cockerels. Seriously, it would keep me up nights......

If he sold them to you as older chicks (more than eight weeks), I would think he either doesn't know what he is doing or is selling you roos on purpose. Those barred roos are so obviously male! I hope he isn't duping you on purpose, but if I were you I would get my birds from somewhere else. Many breeds are fairly easy to tell by six weeks or so. Some are trickier, but if he is a breeder he should have developed an eye for it by now.

Eidited to add: And if he really can't tell,than he shouldn't be selling pullets but only straight run.

Me, too, Rachel. I fear he knew what he was doing but is feigning ignorance. Or he thinks he knows more than he really does about sexing..gee, haven't seen that before, have we?

I'm going to guess that this guy is acting like he knows more than he does. I think he had a bunch of backyard chickens, got a plethora of eggs hatching and bingo... a "breeder" is born. I would hope he had a little more knowledge than this, but from the get-go I had pegged the BRs since their combs where so large and red. I am going to have to rehome them or get them ready for the pot. That will put us down to 4 and we'd like more than that (I think we can have up to 12 once we get our fence up). Any suggestions on where to look for some more young hens that are hardy and in good health? I prefer them closer to this age, as I really hope to get some eggs soon.

I would check our own BYC classifieds for young pullets for sale. And do ask the seller about any previous respiratory disease and possibly vaccinations they've had such as Marek's disease. Helps you in the future if you know what their past has been.

Run for the hills if they say they treat their birds for "colds", since chickens do not get head colds like humans do, but respiratory diseases that leave them carriers for the rest of their lives.


Tip: An NPIP certified flock does not mean they are certified free of all disease, either, so don't be overly impressed by that. It has limited value. Just an FYI. Ask questions of any seller. They can lie but some lie with obvious evasion tactics.
