Christina, it was Ivy's normal egg, shell quality great. Actually, they are not eggbound, so no binding. It starts as an infection of the oviduct, I think. Then infection and material from eggs never laid builds up inside. I read in "Diseases of Poultry" that some high production birds have "loose" cloacas and feces backs into the wrong channel, causing an ecoli infection. I'm not sure if this is the only way it happens, but it's happened with several birds, all from the same hatchery, all from the same shipment (except Lexie and Ivy were from a shipment two months later than the other original 8 ladies) so all the same age when this happened. Dr. Brown says it caused hormonally and there is no way to prevent or cure it. So, what is the deal with Ivy? I just say never look a gift horse in the mouth!
I'll be holding my breath till she lays another one, I can tell you. I'm still having a hard time believing this one.
