Removable roosts!

I just finished adding removable roosts using scrap 2X4's. I wanted to slide the roosts over the poop boards for cleaning. Here is what I ended up doing:

Very similar to my set up except my roost is only 3½"from my poop board and I scab on 2 pieces of 2x2 to hold my 2x4 roost in place wide side up.

POOP BOARDS are the "BEST" addition yet. Handles well over ½ of the poop in my set up keeps ammonia smell in check 3½" below roost excellent for catching eggs laid through the night (roost are in cups for easier removal and cleaning). I recently friction fit a piece of vinyl flooring over my poop board.it makes clean up even easier; Pop out; Scrap; Hose; Pop in.

Winter months even easier flex over compost bin DONE!

Easy peasy!.

This is exactly what I'm preparing to do. The ability to slide the roosts back for cleaning is brilliant. Could you please provide me with a few additional details:

Distance between the roost and poop board?
Distance from floor to poop board?
Depth of Sweet PDZ?
Are the back 2x4s (back wall of poop board) necessary?
Are your hens roosting on the front frame of the poop board?
Are you finding that the 20" (front to back) setup is adequate or do you suggest 24" if room is available?
Did this set up provide adequate room for food/water under the poop board?

I am rescuing ~15 adult hens of varying sizes. Did you find this set up to work for small and large breeds?

Thanks so much!

The roosts sit directly middle above the poop board. One poop board is 2' deep which means the chickens will have 12" front and back. The second poop board in 20" deep giving the chickens 10" front and back. I only will slide the roosts back towards the wall when cleaning poop from the Sweet PDZ filled poop boards. I hope that makes sense. Heres a better pic of the daily setup.

So are your two roosts not connected in this pic? Your roost against the black wall lifts back on both ends. The one against the white wall pivots at the end shown above?

Sorry, but we like your setup and I personally am setting up roosts on 2 walls joined in the corner.....like yours appears to be.

A lot of questions there...

Distance between the roost and poop board? about 6 inches

Distance from floor to poop board? 4 feet

Depth of Sweet PDZ? About 2"

Are the back 2x4s (back wall of poop board) necessary? Yes. But only because I have the plywood screwed into it from the bottom and premade the frame in my garage before installing it in the coop.

Are your hens roosting on the front frame of the poop board? Nope. I'm a newbie and my chicks are only 5-6 weeks old. They are using another roost that is 2' off the floor.

Are you finding that the 20" (front to back) setup is adequate or do you suggest 24" if room is available? I won't know until the birds start roosting up there.

Did this set up provide adequate room for food/water under the poop board? Oh Yeah

Correct. They are not connected. The one against the white wall has two wood screw's drilled in the upright support and I drilled two holes on the bottom of the roost so they just fit together like a puzzle. I'll have to send the link for my coop thread. It will make more sense.

Im sorry this update is delayed. Some of my chickens are roosting on the frame. They are now three months old. I have a ton of roost space but they all cram up on one corner. Three or four up on the roost and three or four on the frame below the others. We'll see if behavior changes as they get bigger.

Don't count on it! Mine are doing exactly what yours are doing. Roosting both on the frame and roost and cramming together in the corners. Which is odd since they don't get along well and it's warm (even with the three hardware clothed/screened windows open) and there's several feet of roost space totally unoccupied. I have two coops and this is occurring in both. But I have to say, this setup is terrific. I obsessively scoop all the poop every morning and it takes about 1-2 mins for each coop. 7 hens in one, 16 in the other. I can't even believe how wonderful this is.
