Help! I don't know if I just killed a bunch of baby chicks or not and I am beside myself. I received some full sized hens about 2-3 weeks ago and they are in with my 4 banties (?) One of the new hens takes all the eggs to nest so I have not been collecting them as they had been around a rooster before I got them and I was afraid they might be fertile.
I went out yesterday and removed the little eggs thinking they must be from my banties (sp) because of the size difference. I tried to candle them without success. So I decided to break one open to make sure and there was a full size baby chicken in there:( It didn't move or anything.
I put the eggs back under the hen and she hasn't thrown them out or anything but they were out 20-30 minutes. Will they be ok? I probably turned them. And it is really hot here. 110-114. The chickens have lots of shade(full)where she is sitting and the swamp cooler blows out to where the nesting area is. I'm so scared that I killed them:( Did this hen lay those tiny eggs? I don't think one of my banties is a rooster, no comb or is it possible to have one without. I do have one really bossy silkie who acts like a rooster but still none of them have combs or whatels (sp).
HELP.

I don't think 20-30 min. out will affect them.

At the end the baby fills most of the egg and thus candeling is hard because not much light filters through. Sorry you had to find out...that way. I've incubated and had full grown chicks never pip and I opened them up to see after all the other ones were out and a couple days later...hoping above all hopes. So sad to see them like that.

Now, I do know the fat end should be up and the pointy end down because of the air bubble inside...and they can drowned themselves with the yolk--they are supposed to eat before pipping out.

Good blessings on getting some of those other's to hatch. And figuring out your mystery insemenator.

20-30 minutes is about how long it takes for a hen to come off to eat, drink, and do her business. They do this daily or close to it. The eggs will be fine.

ok thanks, so should I go back out and turn the eggs in the nest so that one of the ends is a certain way?
The hen just had them all kind of laying flat and scrunched up against each other. There is probably 20 or so eggs.
Also how come I have these xtra large eggs than those little tiny eggs with the baby's inside?
That really threw me.
